Vitamin D deficiency rickets and allegations of non-accidental injury
Acta Pediatrica, 07/07/09
Paterson CR - It is important to be aware of this bone disorder in the differential diagnosis of fractures, to investigate appropriately and to recognize that the radiological appearances may be misleading. A mistaken diagnosis of abuse does real harm, not least to the child itself.

| There is increasing evidence that vitamin D deficiency is a great deal more common than most physicians appreciate. In adults vitamin D deficiency may be misdiagnosed as as osteoporosis and treated inapprpriately. In children vitamin D deficiency rickets is one of the many causes of unexplained fractures and fracture-like appearances on x-ray. All too readily these are misdiagnosed as evidence of non-accidental injury. |
