Arthroscopic subtalar fusion for post-traumatic subtalar arthritis
Arthroscopy, 07/02/09
Shazly OE et al. – Study reports that arthroscopically assisted posterior facet fusion of the subtalar joint is an effective method for management of subtalar arthritis after calcaneal fracture.
Methods- Aim was to determine the results of arthroscopic subtalar posterior facet fusion for subtalar arthritis after calcaneal fracture
- Retrospective case series on 10 pts (8 men) who had isolated subtalar arthritis after calcaneal fracture
- All pts were treated conservatively, but pain was not controlled
- Only pts w/o hardware in calcaneus were included
- Pts were treated by posterior subtalar arthroscopic fusion
- Fixation was done by percutaneous cannulated screw; bone graft was not needed
- All pts were evaluated preoperatively and postoperatively by American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society scoring system for ankle and hind foot
- Mean f/u period was 28.4 mo; only 1 case was missed during f/u
- A significant improvement in total American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society score after 2 yrs' f/u was observed
- An improvement in pain and walking distance after f/u
- Mean time for fusion was 11.44 wks
- Only 1 case had painful neuroma at the site of the anterolateral portal
