Gleeson T et al. – Study demonstrates that few interventions to improve adherence and persistence with osteoporosis medications were efficacious, however no clear trends were identified.
Methods- Aim was to examine the design and efficacy of published interventions to improve adherence and persistence of osteoporosis medication
- Search of medical literature databases published between Jan 1990 and July 2008
- Papers that described interventions and provided results for control and intervention subjects were selected
- Design and methods of each study were assessed
- 7 studies met eligibility requirements; 5 of 7 studies provided adherence data
- Of those 5 studies, 3 showed a significant improvement in adherence by the intervention group, with effect sizes from 0.17 to 0.58
- 5 of the 7 studies provided persistence data
- Of those 5, one reported improvement in persistence by the intervention group, with an effect size of 0.36
