Magnetic resonance imaging signs of iliotibial band friction in patients with isolated medial compartment osteoarthritis of the knee
Skeletal Radiology, 06/03/09
Vasilevska V et al. – Study reports that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signs of iliotibial band friction (ITBF) were frequently present in patients with severe medial compartment osteoarthritis of the knee, suggesting that joint space narrowing with varus knee deformity may be a cause of ITBF.
Methods- An assessment of the frequency MRI signs of ITBF in pts with advanced medial compartment knee OA
- Proton density-weighted (PDw) fat-saturated (fatsat) MR images of 128 pts were evaluated
- 41 men and 87 women; mean age: 63 yrs; control group: 94 pts with medial meniscus degeneration w/o cartilage loss
- MRI signs of ITBF were evaluated in both groups
- Transverse images were evaluated separately
- Consensus evaluation using all imaging planes was performed
- 95/128 (74.2%) pts with OA had moderate or advanced MRI signs of ITBF
- 69.5% had advanced degeneration of the meniscus
- In the control group, 26/94 pts had only moderate MRI signs of ITBF
- A significant difference between both groups for the presence of MR signs of ITBF was seen
