B-cell Lymphoma in retrieved femoral heads: A long term follow up
BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, 05/22/09
Zwitser EW et al. – According to the findings reported in this study it is recommend that the routine histopathological evaluation of all femoral heads removed at primary total hip arthroplasty be carried out as a tool for quality control, whether the femoral head is used for bone banking or not.
Methods- Study to report on the long-term follow-up of pathological conditions in pts whose femoral heads were retrieved
- All femoral heads removed at the time of primary total hip replacement from Nov 1994 – Dec 2005 were screened histopathologically
- They were included in the bone banking protocol according to the guidelines of AATB and EAMST
- Percentage of B-cell lymphoma in all femoral heads (n=852) were determined
- 1.6% were highly suspicious for low-grade B-cell lymphoma
- 504/852 of femoral heads were eligible for bone transplantation
- 6/504 (1.2%) of femoral heads of this group were highly suspicious for low-grade B-cell lymphoma
- At long term f/u 0.2% of all pts developed systemic malignant disease and 1 of them needed medical treatment for her condition
- In routine histopathological screening variable numbers of low-grade B-cell lymphoma were found throughout the yrs, even when they were eligible for bone transplantation
- Allogenic transmission of malignancy has not yet been reported on, but surviving viruses are proven to be transmissible
