B-cell Lymphoma in retrieved femoral heads: A long term follow up

Zwitser EW et al. – According to the findings reported in this study it is recommend that the routine histopathological evaluation of all femoral heads removed at primary total hip arthroplasty be carried out as a tool for quality control, whether the femoral head is used for bone banking or not.

Methods

Study to report on the long-term follow-up of pathological conditions in pts whose femoral heads were retrieved
All femoral heads removed at the time of primary total hip replacement from Nov 1994 – Dec 2005 were screened histopathologically
They were included in the bone banking protocol according to the guidelines of AATB and EAMST
Percentage of B-cell lymphoma in all femoral heads (n=852) were determined

Results

1.6% were highly suspicious for low-grade B-cell lymphoma
504/852 of femoral heads were eligible for bone transplantation
6/504 (1.2%) of femoral heads of this group were highly suspicious for low-grade B-cell lymphoma
At long term f/u 0.2% of all pts developed systemic malignant disease and 1 of them needed medical treatment for her condition
In routine histopathological screening variable numbers of low-grade B-cell lymphoma were found throughout the yrs, even when they were eligible for bone transplantation
Allogenic transmission of malignancy has not yet been reported on, but surviving viruses are proven to be transmissible
