Concordance of disease progression in bilateral geographic atrophy due to AMD
Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, 10/15/09
Fleckenstein M et al. – GA progression in bilateral atrophic AMD is a symmetrical process; however, GA size may differ substantially between both eyes. High concordance in intra–individual disease progression in presence of a high degree of inter–individual variability indicates an influence by genetic and/or environmental factors rather than non–specific ageing changes. The relatively small concordance for GA size in this cohort may indicate asymmetric evolution of the disease in affected individuals. The results may be useful for the design of future clinical trials aiming at slowing the rate of GA progression.
