Roh JH et al. – This study demonstrates that the PCO rate may be lower in patients who have a combined procedure of PPV and CS than in those who have a sequential procedure.

There is controversy as to whether pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) would be combined with cataract surgery(CS) when vitreoretinal disease coexists with mild cataract. In this case, we can select a combined procedure or a sequential procedure of PPV and CS. Each procedure has several advantages and disadvantages. Especially, we compared posterior capsular opacity (PCO) between two procedures. As a result, PCO rate was lower in patients who have a combined procedure than in those who have a sequential procedure. It was assumed that several causes were associated with that. However, further studies are required to establish the cause and clarify the correlation between PCO rate and the surgical method. Finally, we hope that this article will be a help to ophthalmologists and some clinicians that are interested in ophthalmology.
