Floppy Iris Syndrome: Why BPH Treatment Can Complicate Cataract Surgery
American Family Physician, 06/03/09
Chang DF - Discovering the association between the alpha-1 antagonist tamsulosin (Flomax) and a new complication called intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS) solved a troublesome mystery for cataract surgeons. Characterized by sudden intraoperative iris prolapse and pupil constriction, IFIS causes a significant increase in surgical complications, particularly when it is not recognized, understood, or anticipated. Some complications have been sight-threatening, including severe iris defects associated with permanent pupil deformity, glare, and photophobia.
