Open-angle glaucoma and the risk of stroke development. A 5-year population-based follow-up study
Stroke, 05/26/09
Ho J-D et al. – Findings show a significantly increased risk of stroke development for pts with open-angle glaucoma (OAG) during a 5-yr follow-up period.
Methods- Study of the risk of stroke development after OAG diagnosis
- Retrospective review of data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database for 1,073,891 random subjects from among Taiwan's 23 million residents
- Study cohort: all pts with OAG diagnosis of in 2001 (4032 pts)
- Comparison cohort: 20,160 randomly selected pts (5 for every OAG pt) matched for age, gender, geographic location, and comorbid medical disorders
- Tracking of pts from index visits for 5 yrs
- Cox proportional hazard regression to compute 5-yr stroke-free survival rate after adjusting for possible confounding factors
- Adjustment for demographic characteristics and selected comorbidities
- Stroke in 14.9% of OAG pts and 9.5% of comparison cohort pts during 5-yr follow-up
- Significantly lower 5-yr stroke-free survival rates for OAG pts vs comparison cohort pts
- On adjustment, OAG pts had a 1.52-fold higher risk of stroke vs matched comparison cohort
