Open-angle glaucoma and the risk of stroke development. A 5-year population-based follow-up study

Ho J-D et al. – Findings show a significantly increased risk of stroke development for pts with open-angle glaucoma (OAG) during a 5-yr follow-up period.

Methods

Study of the risk of stroke development after OAG diagnosis
Retrospective review of data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database for 1,073,891 random subjects from among Taiwan's 23 million residents
Study cohort: all pts with OAG diagnosis of in 2001 (4032 pts)
Comparison cohort: 20,160 randomly selected pts (5 for every OAG pt) matched for age, gender, geographic location, and comorbid medical disorders
Tracking of pts from index visits for 5 yrs
Cox proportional hazard regression to compute 5-yr stroke-free survival rate after adjusting for possible confounding factors
Adjustment for demographic characteristics and selected comorbidities

Results

Stroke in 14.9% of OAG pts and 9.5% of comparison cohort pts during 5-yr follow-up
Significantly lower 5-yr stroke-free survival rates for OAG pts vs comparison cohort pts
On adjustment, OAG pts had a 1.52-fold higher risk of stroke vs matched comparison cohort
