As reported in the Journal of Pathology, the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR)-1 is elevated in invasive hepatocellular cancer (HCC) specimens. In a study based on 135 HCC specimens, elevated VEGFR-1 was also associated with worse recurrence-free and overall survival.

The study findings were based on 615,150 patients with AIDS between 1980 and 2009. The study involved 36 and 16 women with ovarian cancer and benign tumors, respectively. The pre-operative cell-free DNA of genes (B2M, RAB25, CLDN4, and ABCF2) were measured and RAB25 was shown to be an independent prognostic factor.
