Parasitic leiomyomas after laparoscopic surgery with morcellation.
Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, 08/01/2012
Leren V et al. – Parasitic leiomyomas after laparoscopic surgery with morcellation are a rare entity, and only a few small series and single case reports have been published in recent years. This paper presents three patients diagnosed in a 8–years period, an incidence of 0.12% after morcellation procedures at Department of Gynecology, Oslo University Hospital Ullevål, Oslo. This was first known as a spontaneously occuring condition, but in later years it has been observed more frequently as an iatrogenic condition after morcellation, and may occur several years after primary surgery. The article also discusses mechanisms leading to parasitic leiomyomas and how to minimize the risk of develoment of this rare condition.
