Five to 10 percent of women of childbearing age suffer from endometriosis. "This common gynecologic condition is a leading cause of pelvic pain and female infertility,". In endometriosis, pieces of tissue detach from the uterine lining, or endometrium, and latch onto other organs in the pelvic cavity. The result: problems such as severe menstrual cramps, heavy periods, painful sex and difficult bowel movements.
