"Inflammatory" changes in breast: how to provide a better care to our patients
Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics, 10/02/09
Rosa M – "Inflammatory" changes of the breast can be seen in many different entities ranging from benign self–limited processes, for example puerperal mastitis, to highly aggressive malignant tumors, such as inflammatory carcinoma. While clinically many of these "inflammatory" processes may look alike, there are some characteristics that allow an accurate differential diagnosis and accordingly a correct treatment.

| Pathologists in general are not involved in direct patient care; however my involvement in the Breast health committee in our hospital has greatly impacted my career. Almost in a weekly basis we see cases of unfortunate women which diagnosis of cancer has been delayed due to the clinical presentation of the disease which is sometimes confused with infectious/ inflammatory processes. I work at a University hospital and we provide care to a population of uninsured and low resources patients, which aggravates the situation due to educational and compliance issues with these patients. Based on this experience, I felt compelled to write this article, to reach our community of physicians and increased awareness about the spectrum of inflammatory-like changes in breast. |
