Codner E et al. – Lower AMH levels in women with DM1 during the fourth decade of life suggest the presence of an earlier decline in the ovarian follicle pool in these women. Further studies are needed to evaluate the mechanism of this complication.

Women with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) have lifelong exposure to hyperglycemia that may affect survival of the follicles. Clinical studies have shown earlier age of menopause in women with T1D. Animal models of diabetes exhibited increased apoptosis of the follicles. In this paper we showed an earlier decline of AMH levels and higher prevalence of menopausal levels of this hormone in T1DM patients compared to healthy women. These data suggest an earlier decline of ovarian follicles in women with type 1 diabetes. We postulated that the mechanism of this abnormality is associated to chronic exposure to hyperglycemia.
