Acupuncture for the treatment of hot flashes in breast cancer patients, a randomized, controlled trial

Hervik J et al. – Acupuncture effectively relieves hot flashes both day and night in operative breast cancer pts treated with Tamoxifen; the treatment effect is associated with general health improvement measured with the validated Kupperman index

Methods

Prospective, controlled trial of the efficacy of acupuncture in 59 breast cancer pts with hot flashes due to anti-estrogen medication
Review of pts after breast cancer surgery and adjuvant estrogen-antagonist treatment (tamoxifen)
Randomization to either 10 wks of traditional Chinese acupuncture or sham acupuncture (SA)
Mean number of hot flashes at day and night noted before treatment, during treatment, and 12 wks post-treatment
Validated health score (Kupperman index) at baseline, at treatment end, and at 12 wks post-treatment

Results

For acupuncture pts during treatment, mean number of hot flashes day and night was significantly reduced by 50% and ~60%, respectively from baseline; further reduced by 30% both day and night during next 12 wks
For SA pts during treatment, day hot flashes were significantly reduced by 25%; this reversed during the following 12 wks; no reduction in night hot flashes
Kupperman index: reduced by 44% from baseline to treatment end and largely maintained 12 wks after treatment in acupuncture pts; no such changes noted for SA pts
