Activity of chemotherapy in mucinous ovarian cancer with a recurrence free interval of more than 6 months: results from the SOCRATES retrospective study.
BMC Cancer, 09/05/08
Pignata S et al. – Platinum-sensitive mucinous ovarian cancer has a poor response to chemotherapy; studies of this histological subgroup are needed
Methods- Retrospective study of chemotherapy activity in pts with platinum-sensitive recurrent mucinous ovarian cancer
- Eligible pts had recurrent ovarian cancer with >6 mo platinum-free interval
- Review of 20 pts with mucinous histotype and 388 pts with other histotypes
- At baseline, mucinous tumors differed from other tumors for an higher number of pts with lower tumor grading and less advanced FIGO stage
- At recurrence, performance status was worse in mucinous pts (statistically significant difference)
- Secondary cytoreduction for ~ 20% of pts in both groups; fewer pts optimally debulked in the mucinous group
- As second line therapy, single-agent platinum vs platinum based-combination therapy or other non-platinum schedules were more frequent for mucinous cancer pts; also response rate was lower than in non-mucinous pts
- Median time to progression and overall survival: worse for mucinous ovarian cancer
- Mucinous cancer pts received fewer chemotherapy lines
