Comparison of cancer registry and clinical data as predictors for breast cancer survival
Seppanen J et al. – Clinical variables are not necessary for breast cancer mortality predictions based on a population-based cancer registry

Methods

  • Study of the importance of the role of screening and clinical tumor characteristics in addition to cancer registry information to describe breast cancer survival
  • Review of a representative clinical database on 483 breast cancer pts diagnosed 1996–1997, linked with Finnish Cancer Registry data
  • Comparison of a survival model with available registry variables to models with screen-detection information and clinical tumor characteristics

Results
  • Estimates of registry stage and age act as surrogates for clinical variables and mammography detection; surrogacy was near complete
  • In cases with dissimilar staging cancer registry, stage was more accurate than clinical stage for breast cancer survival
