Immediate cardiac arrest resuscitation skills are acquired in 8th grade students during normal class hours with a low-cost, short-term, self-instruction video
Resuscitation,

Andresen M et al. – Immediate cardiac resuscitation skills were effectively achieved by 8th grade students with a 15–minute self–instruction video with teacher supervision. An important epidemiological impact on out–of–hospital cardiac arrest outcome could be attained if larger numbers of students are trained with this relatively low–cost method. Long–term retention of skills with this method must still be determined.

Methods
  • Interventional study.
  • One hundred and ninety five 8th grade students from 6 public schools received cardiac resuscitation training during using a brief 15minute self-instruction video during the Physical Education class, with teacher supervision.
  • Before-and-after training skills assessment was performed in a scenario format by human examiners.

Results
  • Cardiac arrest recognition improved from 5.8% to 95.7% (p=0.001).
  • Ambulance response system was activated by 2.1% and 95.7% of the students before and after training, respectively (p=0.001).
  • Uninterrupted chest compressions were delivered by 1.2% and 59.6% of the students before and after training, respectively (p=0.001).
  • Mean chest compression frequency during cardiac resuscitation was 17 per minute before training and 115 per minute after (p=0.001).
