Position Summary: The Registered Nurse is responsible to the Director, Womens Health Unit to provide age appropriate and culturally sensitive care to newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Competency is evaluated based on the assessment of the nurses ability to utilize the nursing process as it applies to the care of Perinatal maternal and newborn nursing and basic medical-surgical and pediatric nursing, while effectively interacting with patients, significant others, and other health team members, while maintaining standards of professional nursing.

Basic Qualifications:
Education:
• Graduation from a School of Nursing.

Experience:
• Minimum 3 years experience as an RN in the Womens Health unit.
• Verbalizes use of the following: Oxygen including portable, Arterial Temporal Thermometry device, Pulse Oximetry, Doppler, Fingerstick glucose machine.
• Verbalizes where to find the following: PKU supplies, Cord clamp cutter, First line medication on Crash Cart, Suction equipment, IV supplies, CO2 detector.
• Verbalizes what POCT procedures are performed on the unit.
• Verbalizes normal newborn transition transitional care including thermoregulation, glucose monitoring and respiratory status.
• Verbalizes patient identification process.
• Verbalizes process to improve the effectiveness of communication among caregivers.
• Verbalizes process to improve the safety of high alert medications.
• Verbalizes process to eliminate wrong site, wrong patient, and wrong procedure surgery.
• Verbalizes process to improve the effectiveness of clinical alarm systems.
• Verbalizes process to reduce the risk of health care acquired infections.
• Completes RMCHCS Basic Medication Exam with a minimum score of 90%.
• Verbalizes location and use of first line emergency drugs in the crash cart.
• Verbalizes the correct procedures for initiating a code blue procedure.
• Verbalizes the use and where to find the following equipment: Fetal monitor including vital signs, Labor bed, IUPC cable and scalp electrode, Amnio infusion, Vaginal delivery packs, Epidural supplies, Vacuum extraction cups, OB delivery instruments, Pelvic exam supplies, Neonatal resuscitation equipment, Intubation equipment, Defibrillator, Suction Devices, Doppler, Hearing test machine, Isolette, Resuscitation units, Overhead warmers, Newborn scale, Bili lights, Breast pumps, Cardio/respiratory monitor, Catheter kits, Delee catheters, Circumcision supplies, Supplemental Nursing System.
• Demonstrates ability to perform main and secondary IV lines using the IV pumps.
• Demonstrates ability to program PCA infusion.
• Demonstrates ability to program Gentamycin infusion pumps.
• Demonstrates ability to assess fetal heart rates using the Doppler.
• Verbalizes signs and symptoms of preeclampsia/eclampsia and the nursing interventions indicated.
• Demonstrates ability to assess uterine tone.
• Verbalizes purpose and frequency of evaluating uterine tone after birth.
• Verbalizes and identifies nursing interventions to prevent excessive bleeding.
• Verbalizes patients at risk for complications during the post partum period.
• Facilities the breast feeding/bottle feeding process.
• Promotes information about maternal self-care and newborn care prior to discharge.
• Demonstrates the ability to perform gestational age and physical assessments.
• Demonstrates the ability to assess newborns for hyperbilirubinemia.
• Verbalizes actions, uses, usual dosages, and side effects of the following: Pitocin, Magnesium Sulfate, Terbutaline, Methergine, Calcium Gluconate, Appressoline, Erythromycin Ointment, Vitamin K, Gentamycin, Amplicillin.
• Must have completed Post Partum Compendium with test score of 90%.
