Caspase-cleaved fragments of cytokeratin 18 - the promises and challenges of a biomarker for chronic liver disease
Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, 11/03/09
Yilmaz Y – Undoubtedly, the most promising application of CK18 fragments is currently in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and especially for distinguishing patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis vs. those with simple steatosis. Further investigations and technical improvements are required to cross the boundary from research to the clinical application of CK18 fragments as a marker of chronic liver disease.

| There is an urgent need to identify and validate biochemical markers for noninvasive NASH diagnosis. A noninvasive diagnosis of NASH has great potential to radically alter the diagnostic and monitoring strategies through the reduction in the need for liver biopsy. The usefulness of cytokeratin 18 fragments as a potential biochemical marker for NASH has recently generated great interest. Technological advances will likely facilitate the use of cytokeratin 18 fragments and other biochemical markers to identify patients with NASH in the coming years. |
