Varshney MK et al. – Repetitive sclerotherapy using polidocanol is a minimally invasive, safer method of treatment for aneurysmal bone cysts compared with intralesional excision and bone grafting. In this preliminary study, the authors found similar recurrence rates for the two treatment methods, however, this will require confirmation in larger studies.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Manish Kumar Varshney, 10/29/09

The study tries to compare emerging method of treatment for Aneurysmal bone cyst with fantastic results (sclerotherapy) to the current gold standard treatment (intralesional excision with bone grafting). The difficulty for wide spread adoption of sclerotherapy is the need for documantation of comparative results, which is what we tried to do. There is still a trend towards higher efficacy of sclerotherapy but would need substantiation in multicentric studies.
