Prehospital paediatric emergency care: paediatric triage

Sandell JM et al. – The practice of triage was conceived during the Napoleonic wars, with the aim of salvaging those soldiers whose injuries were readily treatable, returning them to the battlefield at the earliest opportunity. Literally, the word triage means "to sieve" or "to sort" (French trier), and those earlier battlefield principles have been refined and expanded to now encompass trauma and medical emergencies, with triage practiced in prehospital and hospital settings.

Recent changes in the provision of Urgent and Emergency Care in the UK have seen a significant proportion of children receiving remote assessment and advice rather than a traditional “face-to-face” consultation. This paper discusses the paediatric triage systems currently available and calls for the development of a common triage system, for both prehospital and hospital application, that is capable of triaging both adult and paediatric patients simultaneously.
