Review of 120 anal cancer patients

Solomon MJ et al. – Chemoradiation is effective organ preserving treatment for anal cancer. Grade 1 and 2 faecal incontinence is a relatively common late toxicity experienced by patients.

As organ function preservation is an important objective of chemoradiation for anal cancer, the relatively high rates of low grade faecal incontinence is a concern. The randomised trials in anal cancer have not detailed faecal incontinence well. Prospective recording of faecal continence rates in future studies of anal cancer, with baseline spincter function or anal manometry would be useful in evaluating the functional impact of chemoradiation.
