Mulryan C – If untreated, the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Historically, little could be done to prevent the progression of HIV to AIDS, but thanks to the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) the prognosis for those living with HIV is much improved. For HAART to have maximal efficacy it must be used early in the disease process and long before the development of AIDS.
