'A labour of love?': mothers and emotion work
British Journal of Midwifery, 10/07/09
John V – One important finding was that the mothers identified that it was important for midwives to be intuitive and sensitive to their changing needs. The mothers realized that their needs altered during labour as they experienced feelings of fear, relief and changes in consciousness. Thus, mothers used emotional management techniques to stay calm and gave subtle clues to indicate the level of input they needed from their midwives. They also noted the need for different types of emotional care in different situations.
