Ioannou S – This article challenges the one–dimensional approach of the ‘nutrition value of foods’ approach for convincing young people to choose healthy foods and strongly suggests the need to provide them with opportunities to become aware of and critical about the symbolic value of eating choices.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Soula Ioannou, 10/18/09

This article provides an in-depth account of the beliefs and experiences regarding the symbolic value of eating from a specific group of young people in Cyprus. A central finding is that the symbolic values of eating amount to a vital resource, through which young people play with their self- and life- style images, communicate and interact with peers. This article highlights the enhanced utility of understanding eating in ways which depart from mono-directional and judgemental approaches within health promotion efforts and concentrate on spoken voices and lived experiences. It strongly suggests the need to provide young people with opportunities to become aware of and critical about the symbolic value of eating.
