Aschenbrenner DS – Propylthiouracil, used in the treatment of Graves' disease, can increase the risk of serious liver injury, including liver failure and death. The FDA recommends limiting the use of propylthiouracil to patients who are allergic to or intolerant of methimazole and to women in the first trimester of pregnancy.
