| Holistic Nurses base their practice in beliefs such as mind-body-spirit integration that creates a whole greater than the sum of the parts; unconditional respect for the dignity of individuals; primacy of the nurse-client relationship;client as primary source of information; and empowerment of the client as a key focus of care. These beliefs are clarified in AHNA's Core Values and Standards of Care. ANA recognized these in 2006 when Holistic Nursing was identified as a Specialty in Nursing. A joint ANA/AHNA publication followed clarifiying the scope of Holistic Nursing, given AHNA's Core Values and Standards for Practice. AHNCC believes that National Certification Examinations should be derived from these Values and Standards, should be based on how nurses think about their practice as well as what they do, and should be systematically evaluated using a retroductive process. This article describes the processes used by AHNCC's to ensure that certification is based on a core of knowledge and related skills, unique to Holistic Nursing, rather than daily activities of practice.
