Chapman V – This article identifies some of the practical skills left–handed midwives may find awkward or near impossible. For midwifery students the problems of learning new skills with their right hand poses the greatest difficulties. Mentors and tutors need to identify and even place left–handed students with other left–handers for learning left–hand specific techniques such as perineal repair. In addition, mentors need to teach flexibly and allow left–handers to use their left hand if preferred, even if it means they need to stand on the opposite side of the woman, such as when palpating, performing a vaginal examination or delivering a baby.
