Pooled analysis of elderly patients with non-small cell lung cancer treated with front line docetaxel/gemcitabine regimen

Pallis AG et al. - The docetaxel/gemcitabine regimen has a comparable efficacy and tolerance in young (<70 yrs) and elderly (>=70 yrs) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients.

Methods

An evaluation of the impact of age on efficacy and toxicity of docetaxel-gemcitabine combination chemotherapy in advanced NSCLC pts
Pooled data from 6 clinical trials were analyzed
According to their age, pts (n=858) were divided into two groups: age <70 yrs and those with >=70 yrs

Results

77.6% pts were <70 yrs, whereas 22.4% pts were >=70 yrs old
Overall RR was 30.3% and 30.2% for pts <70 yrs and >=70 yrs, respectively
The median time to tumor progression was 4.1 and 4.5 mos for patients <70 yrs and >=70 yrs, respectively
Median overall survival was 9.9 and 9.2 mos for pts <70 and >=70, respectively
Performance status and stage were independent factors with an impact on the hazard of death
Chemotherapy was well tolerated, but the incidence of grade III/IV mucositis was higher in elderly pts
