After attending this meeting, participants should be able to:
  • Describe how to develop and manage an observation unit based on published evidence and best practices.
  • Discuss the potential impact of observation medicine on the ED, the hospital, and patients with specific clinical conditions.
  • Describe an evidence based approach to managing selected clinical conditions in the EDOU. This includes: Patient selection, management in the EDOU, and what beneficial clinical outcomes may be expected.
  • Explain how to code and bill for observation services, and identify what CMS’s new requirements are.
