Traumatic injuries remain the primary cause of death in young adults between ages of 18-50. EMTALA legislation passed by Congress was intended to reduce inappropriate patient referrals to level-1 trauma centers. However, this legislation has had the paradoxical effort of making legitimate transfer of seriously injured patients more difficult. As a result, more patients with complex injuries remain at the admitting hospital placing the responsibility for care on the surgeons practicing at non-trauma hospitals.
