Non-invasive techniques for fetal monitoring in pregnancy and labour
British Journal of Midwifery, 10/06/09
Hale R – During labour the use of a traditional fetal heart monitor (CTG machine) can often limit the mother's choice of birthing position. The rise in the use of hand–held doppler devices has enabled midwives to monitor fetal heart rates in the community setting and even underwater during a waterbirth delivery. Many expectant mothers, especially those who have experienced a previous difficult pregnancy, experience anxiety between obstetric appointments. Hand–held doppler devices are now available for hire or purchase for the mother to use herself.
