Body composition at high altitude: a randomized placebo-controlled trial of dietary carbohydrate supplementation
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 10/05/09
Macdonald JH et al. – High–altitude exposure decreased body mass, including the functionally important residual component. These losses were not abated by increasing energy intake or an initially high fat mass. Factors other than negative energy balance must contribute to body–composition changes with chronic hypoxia.

| We believe this finding to be important because it will influence how skiers, mountaineers, and people working in hypoxic environments should prepare for travelling to high altitude. Previously Doctors may have recommended to prepare by “fattening up” (eating lots of calories). Our recent findings suggest it is more important to increase muscle mass. Thus doing anabolic exercise seems important to help prepare for the weight loss that will likely be experienced during high altitude sojourns. Finally, successful strategies to help prevent weight loss that can be implemented during high altitude exposure remain unknown. |
