Prenatal diagnosis and postnatal outcome of fetal spinal defects without Arnold-Chiari II malformation
Prenatal Diagnosis, 08/19/09
Wilson RD et al. – Prenatal differentiation between closed and open NTD is not always possible. Postnatal outcome of isolated myelocystocele and MMC seems to be more favorable than for an NTD with ACM II (shunt requirement). Incontinence is the major childhood morbidity. Maternal obesity may be a risk factor for closed NTDs.

| This article highlights the importance of the correct diagnosis being made so that the appropriate information can be given to parents regarding the prenatal and postnatal expectations. This article highlights as well that a multidisciplinary team is required to maximize the care to fetus's with birth defects that contribute to longterm mordidity. Parents are very vunerable during the prenatal diagnosis process and accurate and correct information is needed to allow them to make personal decisions.Multiple imaging techniques may be required including ultrasoound and MRI to accurately assess the fetal anomaly(ies). Only when the correct prenatal diagnosis is made can the correct options(in-utero, postanatal, location for delivery, timing of delivery) for care be discussed and triaged. |
