Prospective assessment of patient directed outpatient communication from a patient and general practitioner perspective
Postgraduate Medical Journal, 08/10/09
Mahadavan L et al. – The majority of patients were satisfied with this new style of clinic letters and expect to receive them in the future. The high satisfaction rates could be attributed to the simple and clear language used in the letters. However, the views of patients have not been reflected by GPs, with 20% of GPs preferring to receive a personally directed letter.

| This is a study perfomed to empower and involve patients in their own healthcare. This was done by providing all patients attending a surgical outpatient clinic with a clinic letter addressed directly to them at the end of the consultation. Patient satisfaction of these clinic letters and their clinic appointment was then assessed. We also aimed to assess the view and acceptance of GPs to the new style of clinic letters in this study. The majority of patients (94%) were either satisfied or highly satisfied with the clinic letters and 75% of patients preferred a patient directed letter to a copy of the GP letter. However, this view was not reflected by GPs and only 79% of GPs felt patients should routinely receive a clinic letter. Furthermore, 20% of GPs preferred to a receive a personally directed letter. |
