Do Electronic Health Records Help or Hinder Medical Education
PLoS Medicine, 05/22/09
Peled JU et al. - Eager to comply with these mandates and anxious to avoid financial penalties, hospitals are implementing EHR systems on a large scale. The effects of this implementation on patient care have not been uniformly positive, and a number of reports of risk have already been published. The experiences have led us to believe that the potential risk of EHRs to medical teaching may be just as significant and, if not addressed, could erode the education of an entire generation of physicians. On the other hand, if the EHR is used as a tool rather than an end unto itself, it will improve the education of young physicians as well as the care of the patients.
