Urschel S et al. - CVID in children presents with comparable symptoms and disorders as in adults. The authors found a significant influence on growth and development. The marked delay of diagnosis may be due to overlap with common pediatric disorders, while also reflecting insufficient awareness of these disorders.

Simon Urschel , 05/29/09

The main intention of our study was to raise awareness of this immunodeficiency complex in childhood. The clinical overlap to more common pediatric diseases as atopic disorders and "normal childhood infections" leads to cases of children that went from specialist to specialist receiving treatment for each of their symptoms but not for the underying disease (the median interval from typical symptoms to CVID-diagnosis and initiation of specific treatment was >5 years). Even though our study did not evaluate the benefits of immunoglobulin replacement therapy it is very likely that many of the, somtimes severe, sequelae could have been avoided with earlier adequate treatment. A screen of immunoglobulin plasma levels in patients with suspicious symptoms would be sufficient to lead further diagnostics in the right direction,
