Red Yeast Rice for Dyslipidemia in Statin-Intolerant Patients
Becker DJ et al. - Statin-associated myalgias prevent some patients who would benefit from drug therapy for dyslipidemia from receiving it. After 12 and 24 weeks, patients who received red yeast rice, 1800 mg twice daily, had significantly larger improvements in both LDL and total cholesterol levels than did patients who received placebo. All patients were concomitantly enrolled in a 12-week therapeutic lifestyle change program. Pain, creatinine phospho-kinase levels, and liver enzyme levels did not differ between groups. Red yeast rice and therapeutic lifestyle change decrease LDL cholesterol level without increasing CPK or pain levels and may be a treatment option for dyslipidemic patients who cannot tolerate statin therapy.
