Vogelgesang A et al. – Mitoxantrone treatment in MS enhances the inducibility of TH2–type cytokines, which may contribute to its beneficial effects in multiple sclerosis.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Alexander Dressel, 12/10/09

This study was performed to investigate whether the immunosuppressive drug mitoxantrone that has been shown to be beneficial in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) would also induce a shift in cytokine patterns. Indeed, we detected an enhanced inducibility of these cytokines in cells derived from MS patients treated with Mitoxantrone. We therefore conclude that this effect is likely to represent an additonal mechanism of action of mitoxantrone. Our study supports the hypothesis that immunosuppressants with additional immunomodulatory effects are promising candidates in the search for future therapies of Multiple Sclerosis.
