Haines TP et al. – The intervention may be beneficial for reducing the rate of falls in this patient population though further research with a larger sample size is indicated.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Terry P Haines, 11/04/09

Exercise, preferably higher in intensity and with a balance challenge element, has repeatedly been demonstrated to be beneficial for the prevention of falls amongst community dwelling older adults. Attention is now needed to focus upon innovative ways to enable and enhance participation in exercise for the prevention of falls amongst older adults. This pilot randomized trial sought to take advantage of the now widely available DVD technology to enable older adults recently discharged from hospital to participate in falls prevention exercises. The reduction in falls observed in this trial was consistent with other trails investigating falls prevention exercise programs, though was not significant due to the small sample size. It should be noted that the patient population chosen for this trial was particularly frail with poor health-related quality-of-life ratings and experiencing a very high rate of falls. Larger studies are now indicated both amongst this population and others.
