High Prevalence of Abnormal Nocturnal Oximetry in Patients With Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
JACC - Journal of the American College of Cardiology, 10/28/09
Eleid MF et al. – Abnormal nocturnal oximetry is common in patients with HCM, suggesting that OSA is prevalent. OSA may impact hemodynamics and symptoms in HCM. Further studies are needed to determine the long–term benefit of OSA treatment on hemodynamics and disease progression in HCM.

| Our study's discovery that nighttime oxygen desaturations are common in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy raises the importance of screening for obstructive sleep apnea in this patient population. Patients with symptoms from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy despite optimal medical therapy may experience benefit from treatment of their sleep apnea which could possibly decrease the need for septal reduction therapy (surgery or alcohol septal ablation), which some patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy ultimately require. |
