McCann L et al. – The authors' evaluation demonstrated that introduction of formalised stroke care to a regional hospital resulted in improved compliance with key performance indicators and better patient outcomes. Thus evidence–based specialised stroke care can be offered with confidence in regional populations.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Leanne McCann, 10/01/09

This study will help inform other regional / rural health services in their quest to provide national stroke guidelines in a setting where specialist resources can be limited. Our results show that having an enthusiastic, coordinated multidisciplinary team lead by a Physician and Stroke Liaison Nurse can deliver achievable improvements in acute stroke care. Grateful thanks to our stroke team, the tertiary support provided by Dr Anne Gardner and Ms Lynne Miller, and the funding support by the Windermere Foundation LTD. We welcome any queries.
