Baseline cognition, behavior, and motor skills in children with new-onset, idiopathic epilepsy
Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology, 08/27/09
Bhise VV et al. – The findings suggest intrinsic abnormalities in children with new–onset, idiopathic epilepsy at baseline.
Dr David E Mandelbaum, 08/29/09
| Epilepsy is much more than a "seizure disorder"; it is a neurological condition, which, particularly in children, is often genetic and has implications for overall neurological development. Viewed thusly, it is hardly surprising that learning, cognitive and behavioral problems are common in children with epilepsy, even those with relatively "benign" forms. Vigilance regarding these problems, even in the child whose seizures are well controlled, is an important component of their care and making educators aware that these children are at risk for academic difficulties is a crucial role for child neurologists. |
