Cognitive limitations in occupationally active malignant brain tumour survivors

Calvio L et al. – Occupationally active malignant brain tumour survivors (MBTS) report higher levels of cognitive limitations. However, modifiable factors were related to cognitive limitations in both groups and should be considered when developing approaches to improve cognitive limitations in the workplace.

These findings indicate that working brain tumor survivors while experiencing memory, executive functioning and attentional challenges at higher levels than employees with no history of cancer, report the same pattern of factors the were related to limitations at work. Higher levels of job stress, depressive symptoms and negative problem solving which are all modifiable were related to work limitations in both groups. Results suggest that challenges at work among brain tumor survivors may be mitigated with effective efforts at managing these three areas. The findings indicate that occupationally active survivors of primary brain cancers may benefit from interventions directed at reducing job stress and depressive symptoms while improving their overall problem solving skills. Clinical trials in the work place need to confirm this but the results observed in this study hold potential for improving the quality of life of brain tumor survivors who are able to and desire to remain at work.
