Cognitive characteristics associated with mild cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease
Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders, 08/24/09
McKinlay A et al. – Pts with Parkinson's disease (PD) are heterogeneous in cognitive presentation; however, identification of preclinical dementia (mild cognitive impairment [PD-MCI]) may be possible and serve as an opportunity to understand cognitive decline in PD and its progression to dementia.
Methods- Study of different cognitive subgroups associated with PD
- Use of a broad range of neuropsychological measures and cognitive domains in cluster analysis to identify pt subgroups
- Identification of 3 subgroups of pts
- Subgroup 1 vs controls: no or minimal cognitive impairment (PD-NCI)
- Subgroup 2 vs controls: variable or uncertain pattern of mild to severe cognitive impairments (PD-UCI)
- Subgroup 3 vs controls: evidence of severe cognitive impairment across most cognitive domains (PD-MCI)
- Subgroups did not differ in age, motor impairment, or disease duration
