Anhedonia and cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease: Italian validation of the Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale and its application in the clinical routine practice during the PRIAMO study
Parkinsonism & Related Disorders, 08/21/09
Santangeloag G et al. – The Italian version of the Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS) is a reliable tool to assess anhedonia in pts with Parkinson's disease (PD) and other forms of parkinsonism.
Methods- Study of the psychometric properties of the Italian SHAPS version
- Evaluation of the relationship between anhedonia, depression, and cognitive impairment in PD
- Pilot study of Italian SHAPS translation (14 items) plus 2 added items evaluating physical anhedonia related to sexual issues
- Validation of Italian SHAPS in 274 consecutive PDpts and in healthy subjects
- Pt classification: major depression by DSM-IV criteria (dPD) or without depression (nPD)
- Administration of SHAPS to 1307 pts with different types of parkinsonism to test instrument feasibility and to determine whether clinical data affect anhedonia
- Easy-to-understand question/answer modes
- Intraclass coefficient for test–retest reliability: 0.65 for total score
- KR index: 0.61. ANOVA of SHAPS total score showed higher scores in dPD pts vs healthy controls and nPD
- In 1307 pts with various types of parkinsonism, SHAPS data showed that anhedonia related to age, type of parkinsonism, apathy, depression and cognitive impairment
- Anhedonia correlated with frontal dysfunctions in supranuclear palsy and PD pts
