Predictors of loneliness in caregivers of persons with Parkinsons disease
Parkinsonism & Related Disorders, 08/24/09
McRae C et al. – Because loneliness was significantly predicted by caregiver rather than pt variables, strategic interventions for caregivers may ameliorate loneliness.
Methods- Study of loneliness among caregivers of Parkinson's disease (PD) pts
- Assessment by survey mailed of 70 caregivers (74% female; 96% spouses) currently living with the PD pt
- Assessment instruments: UCLA Loneliness Scale, Social Provisions Scale, Hoehn and Yahr (caregiver version), a perceived Self-Efficacy Scale for use with PD caregivers, and questions related to pt and caregiver characteristics
- Hierarchical regression analyses for whether pt or caregiver characteristics were more predictive of loneliness
- Survey response rate: 39%
- Caregivers reported more loneliness than all similar normative groups except Alzheimer caregivers
- Pt variables accounted for only 12% of variance in loneliness
- Caregiver variables accounted for additional 46% of variance
- Significant individual caregiver predictors of greater loneliness: less education, lower perceived self-efficacy, and poorer physical health
- Persons attending caregiver support groups reported less loneliness and more perceived support vs those not attending support groups
