Parkinsons disease, levodopa-use and the risk of melanoma
Parkinsonism & Related Disorders, 08/21/09
Vermeij JD et al. – The factors responsible for increased development of melanomas in Parkinsons disease (PD) pts are unknown; this association needs further study. Based on these findings, authors recommend removal of the associated drug insert warning for levodopa as it may cause unnecessary fear for pts and physician resistance to prescribing this drug.
Methods- Opinion on Parkinsons disease, levodopa use, and melanoma risk
- Literature since 1970s suggests association between PD with levodopa use and increased risk for malignant melanoma
- Possible association noted on drug insert for levodopa
- Findings based on 5 studies: 1) risk increased for melanomas in PD pts; 2) increased risk is present before PD diagnosis; 3) a role for levodopa is unlikely
