A hard day's night: A longitudinal study on the relationships among job demands and job control, sleep quality and fatigue
Journal of Sleep Research, 08/20/09
De Lange AH et al. – Results showed that changes in exposure history relate to changes in reported sleep quality and fatigue across time. Transition from a non-high-strain towards a high-strain job significantly increases in sleep-related complaints, conversely, transition towards a non-high-strain job did not related to improvement in sleep-related problems.
Methods- Prospective 4-wave complete panel study among 1163 Dutch employees for:
- 1) Causal direction of longitudinal relations among job demands, job control, sleep quality and fatigue
- 2) Effects of stability and change in demand-control history on development of sleep quality and fatigue
- Significant effects of job demands and job control on sleep quality and fatigue across a 1-yr time lag, supporting strain hypothesis
- No reversed or reciprocal causal patterns
- Cumulative exposure to a high-strain work environment (characterized by high job demands and low job control) associated with elevated levels of sleep-related complaints
- Cumulative exposure to a low-strain work environment (low job demands and high job control) associated with highest sleep quality and lowest fatigue level
